Use one or two gutter clips to secure the extension cord and then plug in the lights to the cord. Use a yard stake to hold the cord in place at the corner then climb the ladder with the other end in hand. One approach is to simply attach your lights to your shingles rather than your gutters. It works with any type of light.

Once you re at the top of the ladder have your assistant hand you the gutter clips and a string of lights. These hooks are very easy to use just put the end through the mesh and lay the light string in the hook. However do not nail or staple into the shingles to hang those lights as this could void your roof warranty. Hang the lights pointing up or down just make sure they re all clipped in the same direction.

From here you can either continue on to the gutters using socket caps or electrical tape to cover unused sockets between locations or start with a new light string to continue hanging lights on your remaining gutters and peaks. Crimp with your fingers and the lights are up. If you don t have gutters you can use the same clip to attach lights to your shingles instead. Even though they are metal colored they are not too noticeable against the brown gutters.
