Do this by sliding hard under the layers of shingle and paper then pry upward. Using pry bars remove the ridge vent if present. Remove shingles in a 2 to 3 ft wide section as you work down the roof. The shingles will roll up like a ball in front of the fork.

Push the shingles down to the roof jacks. Starting at the ridge use your shovel to pry off old shingles. Use reflective mineral granules or a factory applied coating rather than a dark coating on a mineral surfaced sheet. Continue tearing off the shingles and underlayment until you reach the roof jacks then start over at the top of the roof.

If no ridge vent is present use your shovel to remove the shingle cap on the ridge.
