First check the sensor lights.
Check garage door for binding.

Having to hold down the button is a classic something has interrupted the beam symptom.
If anything interrupts this beam of light the garage door will not close and the ceiling light on the opener mechanism will flash as mentioned in the previous step.
You will find that the door will only move an inch or so in the close direction and reverse.
